Drake Passage. Feb 15


Rocking and rolling all day. Tom basically slept all day. His way to cope with seasickness. Team trivia still in the lead but losing 3 members of entertainment staff. Dinner in room. Steve Stevens (from my trivia team) show in evening. Later in evening swells reduced as we entered more sheltered waters of Beagle Channel.

·        Sucks.  Queasy all day. Get up and go back to sleep numerous times during the day. A completely shot day.  I later calculate that I spent 4 man-days worth of time immobile, definition being can’t read or watch movies on tablet and need to look at horizon every so often.
·        Room service is still a cluster fuck.  Can only order from The Restaurant or the room service menus.  4-5 minor screw ups in the actual delivery
·        We can’t get served at Observation Bar while all around us people are served…  This is before dinner.  After 15 minutes waiting and seeing ⅔ couples around us get served I go to bar and say that I’ll wait while I am served.  End up taking the cocktail to restaurant. ***Mixed up.  took drink to dinner with Steve, not his show***
·        Starting to feel human again even though I can see swells outside at I type this at 845pm.  Going to see one of MJP’s trivia team people, Steve from England, perform at 945.
·        Song and jokes show. One excellent line -- met some interesting people on this cruise. Even one who only has 1 house… and a job.
·        Going to spend 1 ½ days in Ushuaia which had originally only merited 7am-1pm…

7 am wakeup for final breakfast followed by disembarkation.  Turned out we were sharing our tour/transfer with two of the people at our table for dinner with Steve Stevens.  They recognized us and figured there couldn’t be many Maxines on the ship.   After waiting about a half hour, our tour guide, Alwin, returned to pick us up and we were on our way.  We drove along the coast through some pretty beach towns and rock strewn beaches.   Apparently the rip tide is so strong that it’s illegal to ocean swim in this area.   Saw Pablo Neruda’s beach house and had lunch at a beachfront restaurant.  Afternoon included the largest swimming pool in the world -- it was big and basically fronted a 15 tower condo complex reminiscent of Las Vegas.   Wine tasting at Emiliana, an organic vineyard and label owned by Concho y Toro.   Landscape and light of countryside on the way to Santiago strongly reminded us of Southern California.  It was a little sp...

In sight of Antarctica -- South Shetland Islands. Half Moon Bay. Saturday. February 9

  Landing on Half Moon Island.  Despite nervousness about zodiac and cold, everything went very smoothly.  Saw chinstrap penguins and seals.   Also whale bones.   Scenic cruising past iceberg A57A.  Truly amazing!   ·         Wake up to islands outside our window.  Majestic.   A bit nervous too.  This is it! ·         Our group is 2nd to go out, which I’m glad about because it gives us chance to sleep in (first group is 8am) and to fuss about it all.  We learn over time that a 10am departure with a 945 call means that you have to have started suiting up at 930.   Pulling boots on is a challenge.  I fuss like crazy with my things as we're waiting in Zodiac line.   Really it is no colder than a cold day in Chicago.   At some point on land I open up my jacket. ·         We’re on the last Zodiac ...

Arrive in Ushuaia. Feb 16

Very windy morning in Ushuaia.  So windy that the docks and port were closed.  Ship anchored in harbor amid lots of whitecaps.  Our team tied for a win in a one-off trivia competition.  We’re really going to miss our entertainment members, Steve, Harry and Sharon.  In the afternoon, Tom and I went into Ushuaia and walked around the town.   Saw the prison museum, many souvenir shops and outdoor outfitters.  Still very windy.   We sat at Steve Stevens table for dinner and enjoyed visiting with Steve, Sharon and some other veteran Seabourn cruisers. ·         Sleep through the night WITH the aid of ambien.  Surprises me that I can sleep even with help given how much I slept yesterday.  Wake at 4am then at 7. We’re still in motion. MJP leaves 745 and I get up 830. By then we’re anchored in the middle of the bay at Ushuaia with extreme whitecaps.  So much for being on land by 9am.   I have br...
